All I know about Love by Neil Gaiman

Ben and I were talking about his wedding yesterday and I looked up wedding readings.  I found this by Sam's favourite author and I think it sums it all up perfectly.

This is everything I have to tell you about love: nothing

This is everything I've learned about marriage: nothing.

Only that the world out there is complicated,
and there are beasts in the night, and delight and pain,
and the only thing that makes it okay, sometimes,
is to reach out a hand in the darkness and find another hand to squeeze,
and not to be alone.

It's not the kisses, or never just the kisses: it's what they mean.
Somebody's got your back.
Somebody knows your worst self and somehow doesn't want to rescue you
or send for the army to rescue them.

It's not two broken halves becoming one.
It's the light from a distant lighthouse bringing you both safely home
because home is wherever you are both together.

So this is everything I have to tell you about love and marriage: nothing,
like a book without pages or a forest without trees.

Because there are things you cannot know before you experience them.
Because no study can prepare you for the joys or the trials.
Because nobody else's love, nobody else's marriage, is like yours,
and it's a road you can only learn by walking it,
a dance you cannot be taught,
a song that did not exist before you began, together, to sing.

And because in the darkness you will reach out a hand,
not knowing for certain if someone else is even there.
And your hands will meet,
and then neither of you will ever need to be alone again.

And that's all I know about love.

Wedding Bells?

Ben and Bobby are getting married in October 2024.  They have decided to get married at the Botanical Gardens (or at least have their reception there).  They went to visit while Bobby was in town.

End of an era???? My second office is cleared out

My office with the perfect view has now been cleaned out completely.  Now I just have the one looking over the dumpsters!!!!

End of an era????? Closing down the lab

Sinced I have been working in adminstration 100% of the time and not done anything in the lab for years, I have finally cleared everyone out and closed dfown the lab.  There was a lot to get rid of, but a lot was given away to other investigators that could use it.

The stuff that no one wanted all got thrown away.  Luckily, one of the guys in housekeeping took the time to just get rid of it all with me.
Boxes and boxes of things that could not be used by anyone else.  Very sad and makes you realize that a lot of money gets wasted.
More boxes!!!!
It all looks very pristine now it's all been cleared away.  I will really miss this lab, it was my home for so long and the best lab I've had while at SLU.
The paper dispenser was acquired from another lab, I think it belongs in a museum!!!  I may not be able to part with it completely and might have to bring home!!!!

Ben graduates from SLU

Ben graduated from the Psychology program at SLU today.
We had a bit of a patio party for him after graduation.  We never make a big show of things, we have a very small circle of friends.
Just the usual suspects!!!
Ben is going to Wash U in the Fall to do a Masters in Social Work, he is very excited about this as Wash U is his "dream school"!!!  We have had to go and walk around the campus quite a few times already!!
I found this really cool balloon for him and hung it on his door while he was gone.

Happy 25th Wedding Anniversary to us (2 years later)

Sam and I went to Michigan for our 25th wedding anniversary.  Yes, it was 2 years late and no, it wasn't Barbados, but we finally got away somewhere after COVID.  It was a nice quiet few days away together.  Ben stayed at our house to keep an eye on Maggie and they did perfectly well without us.  We stayed in 2 separate B&B places, both very nice.  Sam took his bike and went riding a couple of times.  I went running and got absolutely soaked-I have never been that wet in my life!!!!!
On our anniversary, we found a great little place to eat.  The silverware was wrapped in these spider napkins, so of course we had to send a picture back to Ben (our resident arachnophobe)
The restaurant was famous for martinis-mine was chocolate of course!!!!!
It was a tapas bar, and we got some of the best beef tenderloin we have ever had
We stayed outside of South Haven for the first 3 days, in a place with a small vineyard.  It was very nice and peaceful and we almost had the place to ourselves most of the time
We stayed in South Haven for the next 3 days, our room looked out over the harbour
We did a lot of beach wandering, sunset watching and general lounging around!!!!

Beds were looking very lush this year
The sign says the flowers smell like maple syrup-yes, they do!!!!
Flowering baskets in the Kemper center are always looking great
